This panel - which builds on the Association's white paper of the same title - aims to provide a better understanding of the many facets of the European payments industry, providing an overview of local ecosystems and highlighting the specificities of each major market. The European payments landscape has been transformed by the emergence of new players and services. With it come obstacles related to security issues and compliance with regulatory requirements, which only the strongest can overcome. Ultimately, who will be the key players of tomorrow? And who will emerge as true European champions?

To what extent are payment companies valued differently by Private Equity and financial markets? What can explain the difference between the stock performance of Worldline versus Adyen? When and how should your payment company go for an IPO?Despite strong earnings, the valuation of the payments industry is often low compared with the fundamentals. For private payment companies, valuations have also dropped sharply in the last two years although they generally remain higher than those quoted on the financial markets. Most companies looking to go public, see their share price fall below that of the initial offering in the following year. Low stock liquidity, low market depth on the day of the IPO compared with market standards the most common reasons behind a sustained drop in share price. All of this pushed public companies to exit the stock market in recent years, in search of better valuation.
